Hot Balloon hit power lines before crashing in Texas field, killing 16

NTSB: Balloon hit power lines before crashing in Texas field, killing 16

A hot air balloon hit high-tension power lines before crashing into a pasture in Central Texas, killing all 16 on board, according to federal authorities investigating the worst such disaster in U.S. history.
A power line was tripped at 7:42 a.m. Saturday, and the first call to 911 came a minute later, National Transportation Safety Board member Robert Sumwalt said during a news conference. The crash site was near a row of high-tension power lines, and aerial photos showed an area of scorched land underneath.
"There is physical evidence to indicate that the balloon, or some component of the balloon, hit the physical wires themselves and not the tower," Sumwalt said.
The NTSB will look at several factors including reports of foggy weather, but is concentrating first on gathering evidence such as witness statements.
The pilot was Skip Nichols, 49, according to Alan Lirette, who identified Nichols as his best friend, roommate and boss. Lirette said he helped launch the balloon. The NTSB has not yet publicly identified the pilot or the passengers.
Matt Rowan and his wife, Sunday Rowan, were among those on board, his brother Josh Rowan said. The recently married couple from San Antonio, both 34, had texted family and posted on social media pictures of the balloon set up, the rising sun and them in the basket.
"It's a bit haunting now," Josh Rowan told The Associated Press on Sunday.
The NTSB said the balloon was run by Heart of Texas Hot Air Balloon Rides. Nichols' Facebook page identifies him as the chief pilot.

DonaldTrump:The Democrats' Putin dilemma

DonaldTrump:can India look forward?

Donald Trump was the bogeyman of this week's Democratic national convention. But placing a close second to Trump was Russia's President, Vladimir Putin. Democrats linked the two bad guys together, hammering Trump for his past words of praise for Putin as a "strong leader" and his claim that the U.S. would "get along great" with Russia if he is elected.
“He cozies up to Putin,” said President Barack Obama. Vice President Joe Biden denounced Trump for “embracing dictators like Vladimir Putin.” And on Thursday night Hillary Clinton herself said she would defend NATO allies against any threat, “including from Russia.”

But just the day before, on Tuesday, Secretary of State John Kerry sat down with Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov. On their agenda was a U.S. proposal to cooperate with Russia in Syria, which he presented in a meeting with Putin at the Kremlin earlier this month. And on Thursday, a senior Obama administration official reminded a national security conference that better relations with Moscow, something Trump has been criticized for saying would be “a great thing,” remains a core goal of U.S. foreign policy.

“We do not want to be adversarial with the Russians,” said Elissa Slotkin, acting assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs, in a panel at the Aspen Security Conference. “I think, I hope, that the message that Russia is receiving now is that we want to talk to you. We’ll send John Kerry to Moscow. We are open, we are ready to talk to you.”
To be sure, Obama officials have low expectations about the prospects for constructive dealings with Putin, who has pursued an aggressive foreign policy while clamping down on dissent at home. They are also outraged by what they believe to be a Kremlin's hand in the cyber theft and release of Democratic National Committee emails. (Kerry sternly raised the issue with Lavrov on Tuesday, U.S. officials said.) And Slotkin made clear that Washington’s offers of dialogue are part of a “balance” that includes military muscle-flexing and steps like recent U.S. reinforcements of NATO’s eastern flank. “We have to have a twin deter-and-dialogue message,” Slotkin said.

pokemon in syria

At last pokemon's tears for syria

More than five years into the war in Syria it is not always easy for interested parties to get public opinion in the outside world to focus, yet again, on a conflict that can sometimes seem insoluble.
For many watching from a distance, the shock value of reports about the aftermath of barrel bombs, suicide attacks, torture and starving civilians can diminish with repetition.
One tactic that some Syrian activists are deploying to try to shortcut this is to tap into the global phenomenon that is Pokemon Go and to exploit it for all it's worth.
Pikachus, squirtles and weedles and the other characters in the augmented reality game have been unofficially co-opted to highlight the harsh realities of war.
This week the Revolutionary Forces of Syria Media Office - a group of media activists which supports groups opposed to President Assad's regime - has posted a series of photographs of children posing with drawings of Pokemon characters.
The drawings are all captioned with a line identifying that the child is from a particular town or village in a rebel-held area in northwest Syria. The one in the image below reads: "I'm from Kafr Nabl in Idlib province. Come and save me."

The circumstances in which the pictures were taken are not entirely clear. The RFS has not yet responded to a request for comment. But Kafr Nabl is a town which has a history of producing eye-catching banners to try to attract international attention, often appealing for Western military help against the Syrian government.
The message behind the Pokemon portraits - which have been shared thousands of times on social media - seems to be: if you can spend so much time chasing fantastical imaginary creatures then why can't you do more for children growing up in a war.

Artists outside the country have also borrowed Pokemon to make their point. The picture at the top of this article is by Moustafa Jano, a Syrian who now lives in Sweden. It's from a series that he has posted on Facebook, in which Pokemon is seen on the journey made by so many refugees who have fled the war and risked their lives at sea to face an uncertain future in Europe.

Dhoni says "Miss Tests but don't regret retiring"

MS Dhoni speaking about Indian tour of westindies

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India's limited-overs captain, has acknowledged that he misses playing Test cricket, but doesn't regret his decision from retiring from the longest format of the game. The 35-year-old, who quit Test cricket in December 2014 after the third Test against Australia in Melbourne, compared the game to a bug that stays with cricketers even years after pulling the curtains down.
"Obviously you miss playing Test cricket but I don't regret it (retiring)," he said on Wednesday (July 20). "Look, for cricketers it's a passion or call it a bug that stays with you forever. It never leaves you. That's why you are all (seeing) these 40 and 50 plus cricketers who come back for commentary, coaching junior teams.
"As far as I am concerned, this (retirement) gives me a chance to spend time with my family. The time away from cricket has given me lot of time to plan my off season. I hit the gym more, do a lot of running, taking care of my body. Now, after 30, you need to be careful of your body. "In the last 10 years of extensive travelling, I have abused my body a lot. It's because of eating habits as it's more about what you intake that creates problem. So I have been taking care of my body," Dhoni said.
Talking about India's tour of West Indies, Dhoni said that spinners are going to play a key role in the series. "I think wickets will be slower in West Indies, but you never know. I think spinners will have a huge role to play," he said.
Dhoni seemed happy with the competition brewing in the team between the bowlers. "The more the competition better it is. It's good that finally we have a pool of 8-10 bowlers who are pushing for selection. If I look at a year back, during an ODI series against South Africa, there were a few bowlers who were injured," he said.
"And we have bowlers with all areas covered. If you want pace we have that. If you want swing, we have that. Of course, we have to be careful about injury management.
"We have a settled top six batting. There can be one or two new faces but more or less that's how the mix works. They have also played outside subcontinent and have necessary experience," Dhoni added.
Dhoni's next assignment is going to be the limited-overs home series against New Zealand in October.
